‘There is no space that is not haunted by many different spirits hidden there in silence… Haunted places are the only ones people can live in’
(de Certeau 1988:108).

1-13 Parramatta Road, Annandale is a late Victorian terrace form of shop front development with residences over, built in 1903. The current site is derelict and located on a main arterial road leading into the city centre. It is situated directly opposite a 24hr McDonald’s and adjoins the local pub. A development proposal has recently been approved to convert the building into a combined residential and commercial abode; characteristic of the urban ‘rejuvenation’ currently underway in this area. At the time of this fieldwork, the existing interiors were dilapidated but intact, with some original fixtures and fittings from various occupations in place. Newspaper linings (c. 1951) were clearly visible under rotting linoleum floor tiles. Hamburger wrappers, beer bottles and aerosol cans littered the site. The most recent (and illicit) occupants were clearly active participants in the global consumer culture in which they reside. Below are a selection of captures of my initial impressions of the site.
